Intro to Leather Tanning
 |
Leather tanning is an excellent way to earn money for both members and free players, although
free players cannot tan the higher-level dragonhides. Tanning is done by an NPC and requires
no skills, so it's a great method for new players or pures.
|
Different Types of Leather
There are a variety of different types of leather that you can make - from soft and hard leather from regular cowhide
to dragonleather (or d-leather) in green, blue, red, and black. Of these, only cowhide and green dragonleather can be
tanned by free players.
|
When deciding what type of leather you will be tanning, it's important to take profits into account - check the
Grand Exchange database and check which type of leather is worth the greatest amount above its untanned counterpart.
|
 |
You should also take ease of selling the finished product into mind - as a general rule, the higher-level the leather
you create the longer it will take to sell.
The Tanning Process
 |
While there are several NPC tanners available, Ellis (located north of the bank in Al Kharid) is the easiest to access and use.
After purchasing a large amount of your preferred supplies (cowhide or dragonhide), teleport or walk to the Al Kharid bank.
Ellis charges a small fee per leather he tans - 1gp for normal leather, and 20gp for dragonleather. Because of this, you should bring
a stack of coins in your first inventory slot while tanning to take care of the fees.
It takes only 9 seconds to run from the Al Kharid bank to Ellis's shop, so you can easily tan a full inventory in under a minute.
Repeat the process for as long as you wish, and return to the Grand Exchange to sell your leather and buy more hides when necessary.

Tips and Profit
Tanning leather yields surprising profits, especially for a method that requires no skills. Provided you have enough money
available to purchase a good number of hides at once, tanning can yield anywhere from 200K to 500K profit per hour depending on the
hides you use and the current profit margins.
- Always buy many hides at once to prevent unnecessary trips to the Grand Exchange
- Bank all armor and weapons to save run energy, and use weight-reducing items like Spotted Capes
- Use a beast-of-burden familiar like the Spirit Terrorbird (52 Summoning) to tan more hides with each trip.
- You may find it useful to bring at least one energy potion (or use the Spirit Terrorbird's Tireless Run scroll)
