I. Info on the Ankou

A Common Brine Rat

The ankou is a level 75 undead creature found in the depths of the Stronghold of Security. One of the most powerful adversaries available on F2P worlds, it has 60 health points and is aggressive for about the first ten minutes.

The Ankou is a popular target of adventurers for both the experience to be gained and the valuable rewards that are available.

II. Required/Suggested Skill Levels

Ankous inhabit the lowest level of the Stronghold of Security, so you must have completed the Stronghold at least once in order to access their lair. It is also suggested that you be a member if you wish to take decent profits, as the vast majority of the Ankou's valuables are members-only.

Besides these requirements, the following levels are recommended for the most profitable trips:

  1. Melee > At least 70+ combat stats to effectively kill Ankous
  2. Range > 60+ Range
  3. Mage > 60+ Mage

III. What to Bring

Bring the best armor and weapons you can afford when Ankou hunting. They attack with a style similar to most human NPCs (crush), so a good chain or platebody will offer decent protection. The following shows the best possible setup, with other examples listed.

Suggested Gear Helmet: Helm of Neitz > Dragon Med Helm > Rune full helm
Body: Dragon Platebody > Fighters Torso > Rune Platebody
Legs: Dragon Legs > Rune Legs
Boots: Dragon Boots > Rune Boots > Stronghold boots
Ring: Ring of Wealth > Ring of Life > Explorer's Ring
Weapon: Any God Sword > Abyssal Whip > Rune Scimitar
Shield: Dragonfire Shield > Rune Shield
Cape: Any Skill Cape > Obby Cape

As for the inventory, you have several options. Required items are a form of teleport (to escape the Stronghold) and a store of high-level food.

Suggested Inventory Choices

Option A- Very basic option; bring 15 sharks (or lobsters if F2P). Bank/teleport out when you run out of food.

Option B- Bring a few Bunyip pouches (68 summoning required) and use them to heal you.

Option C- Attach the ankous as normal, but when you get down to low health, switch to your guthans set (you can always wear guthans too) to heal you.

IV. Getting to the Stronghold of Security

Map of Routes to the Stronghold of Security Green- Walk/Run up from Varrock and the Grand Exchange.

Blue- Walk/Run from Falador.

Yellow- Using the Skull Sceptre teleport to Barbarian Village

The Ankous are found on the fourth and lowest level of the Stronghold of Security, the Sepulchre of Death. Once you get to the bottom level, follow the Yellow Trail on the map below to the Ankous' chamber.

Ankous are fairly powerful adversaries, but you will find that you can overpower many with a strong weapon and good armor. There is at least one safe spot for mages and rangers in the Ankous' chamber, so the amount of time you can spend is limited only by the amount of loot you can carry.

On member's worlds Ankous are known to drop a variety of cooked food, allowing adveturers to survive even longer in their chamber.

V. Loot

In Member's worlds, Ankous drop a variety of valuables including battlestaffs, Blood and Death runes, herbs, and level-3 clue scrolls.

In nonmember worlds Ankous are still hunted for their ample drops of law runes and adamant arrows, one of the only F2P sources of these items.

Overall, a well-stocked trip into the Ankou's lair can yield rewards for both F2P and P2P adventurers, although the rewards for P2Pers are significantly greater. Best of luck, and happy hunting!
